AAHA certification

We are an American Animal Hospital Association accredited hospital. This achievement means we've passed a rigorous medical quality assessment that evaluated 800 standards. Only 14% of all veterinary hospitals in the United States and Canada have made this commitment to voluntarily participate in an on-site evaluation and passed. The benefit to you is peace of mind knowing we follow the highest standards for veterinary care.

Hospital building

We've been in the North Portland neighborhood for over 33 years. We recently moved to our new, state-of-the-art hospital in February, 2001, and have continued to grow and stay busy. We chose the Frank Llyod Wright bungalow style because of it's simple beauty and comfy feel. We positioned the hospital on the property so we could save three beautiful, mature trees on our NE and NW corners.

Reception

We have two comfy sitting areas so you have lots of room to pick the best place for you. We have a main desk for check-ins and check-outs. We'll prepare your medical record and alert the doctor's assistant that you're here. We also have a children's play area full of toys and books to read. If you have any special needs, just let us know and we'll take care of you.

Diets

We carry several prescription diets: Hills, Royal Canin, IVD, Eukanuba, & Purina to name a few. For regular, premium diets, we recommend Old Mother Hubbard's Wellness diets. They use the best ingredients and if dogs and cats had opposable thumbs, these diets would earn a big two thumbs up.

Exam rooms

One of our doctor's assistants will meet you in the lobby and escort you to one of our six exam rooms. They'll take a brief history, take a weight & temperature reading, and get things ready for the doctor. The doctor will then meet with you, examine your pet, and discuss your pet's health and recommend what's best for you and your pet.

Lab

Sometimes it's necessary to take a blood, urine, or stool sample and run some tests. We have in-house lab equipment & a microscope ready to help us process any diagnostic work. In some cases, we'll send the blood sample to our outside lab for more comprehensive testing. The lab results are usually back the same day or by 10am the following morning. Your doctor will review the findings and call you to discuss results and the next step in the treatment plan.

X-ray & ultrasound

Sometimes your veterinarian will recommend that we take some x-rays to figure out what needs to be done. We'll be very gentle while handling your pet during an x-ray. We may need to use anesthesia to relax your pet or help with pain management. Just like your family doctor has help from a radiologist, we have Dr. Sue Schallberger help our doctors review and interpret your pet's x-rays. For more difficult cases, your doctor may recommend we use an ultrasound to scan your pet's internal organs. Ultrasounds are a safe, painless way to look closely at specific organs or internal growths.

Pharmacy

We have a complete, fully stocked in-hospital pharmacy to make it convenient for you to purchase your prescription at the same time and location where your pet is treated. We carefully prepare each prescription and we'll explain the instructions to you and offer some suggestions and tricks for successfully administering the medications at home.

In some cases, your doctor may decide it's best to have your medication specially compounded. The benefits to compounding a drug are adding flavors to make it tasty, or converting the medication from a pill to a liquid to make it easier to swallow, or changing the medication to a salve so it can be applied to the skin and absorbed instead of given orally.

We also carry Advantage & Frontline Plus for flea control and Heartgard Plus to control heartworms, whipworms, and hookworms.

Surgery

Our doctors handle all types of surgical procedures. We take administering anesthesia very seriously. We take several precautions to make it as safe as possible for your pet. We first run some blood-work to make sure your pet's kidney and liver are functioning normally and can safely handle the anesthesia. We also place an IV catheter and give fluids to maintain your pet's blood pressure and help them process the anesthesia for a quick wake-up and recovery. We use several types of monitoring equipment to ensure your pet's heart-rate, breathing, and temperature remain within normal ranges. Once these things are in place, we use our clean, sterile surgery suite to perform our surgeries. We perform scheduled surgeries Monday through Friday and handle urgent, emergency surgeries as they arise.

Dentistry

We are known as one of the premiere dental practices in the pacific northwest. Dr. McCoy began this tradition in the early 1990's and hired Dr. Pat Frost in 2001 to handle our difficult, challenging dental cases. Just like anesthesia procedures in surgery, we take several precautions to make sure all dental cleanings are safe and effective. We use the same type of dental equipment you would find in a human dental office. We clean your pet's teeth with an ultrasonic cleaner and we probe the gum-line to identify abnormalities and periodontal disease, and we use a dental x-ray machine to show us what's below the gums.

Hospitalization

Lot 's of interesting, exciting things happen in our treatment area. We care for sick, injured pets. We care for squirmy puppies, and recently born kittens.

Quiet room

When your pet's life is coming to a close, we have a special room ready to make your final goodbye quiet and peaceful. You're welcome to stay in this room and meet with the doctor while we perform the euthanasia. When you're ready to leave, you can make a private exit out the back door of our hospital. If you prefer to leave before the doctor performs the euthanasia, you may do that too.

Doctor’s office

Our doctors share the same office. It makes it easy for them to talk about challenging cases, do research, call clients, or hand off cases. Sometimes they find time to eat too.

Wards

We have three types of wards, resting places for your pet, in our hospital. Our general ward is for pets that are visiting for the day or are here for a routine dental or surgical procedure. We have small, medium, and large kennels, and we have six runs for large dogs. We have a separate room for cats and dogs. Our next type of ward is our intensive care unit located in our treatment area. We keep pets recovering from anesthesia or sick, non-contagious pets in these kennels. We keep a close eye on your pet and respond to any health changes quickly. We also give lots of TLC and special care throughout the day. Our final ward is located in our isolation unit. We keep our sick, contagious patients here to control the spread of disease or infection.
